I know you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, I don't always. Sometimes though a cover is especially eye-catching and I can't help but buy or add it to my TBR mountain. Today I feature three fronts which look fantastic. All three books are written by the same author, Paul Cave. The Keep is a fantastic novella which I reviewed (REVIEW HERE) some time back, it's had it's front refreshed along side his other books Cold light of Day and Dead Until Dawn.

THE KEEP

992AD — Northern Russia.

A time of darkness is upon the world - evil has fixed its roots within the blood-soaked earth,
spreading like a malignant disease.

Men from the northlands - Norsemen - have brought a deeper horror to this place, an immortal
being named Ragnar, responsible for enslaving the motherland's people behind walls and battlements.
Holding them with intentions of unspeakable purpose.

A small band of warriors are all that stands between the fate of these enslaved people and their captors.

Josh Sawyer's passionate encounter with Anna, a beautiful and mysterious young woman, was one that would change his life forever. Josh must come to terms with Anna's deep, dark and terrifying secrets - that thrust him into a nightmare of violence and bloodlust. Suspected of grisly multiple murders, the couple are forced to flee Chicago, with the police and FBI hot on their heels. But a more deadly and evil threat is tracking them - Jonus an adversary from Anna's past. Anna has something that Jonus wants - her soul, or that of anyone else who gets in his way...
Picture
Almost a year on from fleeing the city of Chicago, accused of a spate of grisly killings, Josh Sawyer has crossed the American border, taking refuge in a small, unknown Mexican town. Hiding from the US authorities, his place of sanctuary quickly turns desperate, as it becomes apparent that this place is harbouring a dark secret of its own. Meanwhile, at the furthest tip of the northern hemisphere, FBI Agent Sebastian Fernandez is posted to Alaska, his special talents required in helping the citizens of Fairbanks to find a ruthless killer, drawn there by an almost perpetual darkness. Only one person can help both Josh and Agent Fernandez. Someone with the ability to understand how the living psyche can become twisted and immoral. Able to think how killers think. Yet, more importantly, kill how they kill.

About the author

Picture
Paul developed a keen sense of imagination whilst reading dark fiction and watching cult horror movies throughout his teenage years. Heavily influenced by the likes of US Horror writer, Robert McCammon, and movie director, John Carpenter, Paul likes to take a seemingly normal character and put them into an extraordinary situation.

This cover is one which comes up a lot on my post apocalyptic novel recommendations. The cover itself doesn't give much away, in fact I wouldn't have guessed it was a post-apocalyptic novel. The cover uses contrasting colors to great effect and the typography is very effective. Having now read the blurb I am still no closes to unveiling what the cause of the downfall of society is or what haunts the characters within the book, which is exactly why I've added this to my TBR list, very intriguing. Have you read it, what did you think?

Bird Box by Josh Malerman

Picture
Most people ignored the outrageous reports on the news. But they became too frequent, they became too real. And soon, they began happening down the street. Then the Internet died. The television and radio went silent. The phones stopped ringing. And we couldn't look outside anymore. Malorie raises the children the only way she can; indoors. The house is quiet. The doors are locked, the curtains are closed, mattresses are nailed over the windows. They are out there. She might let them in. The children sleep in the bedroom across the hall. Soon she will have to wake them. Soon she will have to blindfold them. Today they must leave the house. Today they will risk everything

I know you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, I don't always. Sometimes though a cover is especially eye-catching and I can't help but buy or add it to my TBR mountain. Today's featured front is Killer App by John Writher, I lover the horizontal stripes against the blood splatter background. Surely, a book containing plenty of violence. Critiques seem divided over the book but I think I'd be willing to give this book a try. If you've read the book I'd love to hear your opinion.

The Killer App by John Writher

Picture
The Killer App is set in a future generation where Britain is crippled by an ageing population, and the associated spiralling costs of pension, health and social care. The new Prime Minister, Robert Hand, pledged to strip-search the country’s finances, as well as funding research and innovation, to remedy the situation. He teams up with Bill Haugan, a ruthless American businessman with a penchant for pushing the boundaries, and Janet Icks, a hard-working genetic scientist wedded to her laboratory. On top of the snow-covered pistes around Davos, Switzerland, the unlikely trio hatch a killer experiment designed to revolutionise society. They all have their own personal interests in the proposal – Hand wants the public vote for solving the demographic imbalance, Icks is keen to test her research to transfer DNA after death, while Haugan has designs on expanding his empire – yet the worlds of politics, big business and science become uncomfortable bedfellows in a bid to rebalance the population. All they need is someone willing to “die to be young again”. Experiment Candidate 1456 is a frustrated artist in his late thirties, depressed at what his life has become after a failed marriage. Convinced he can do better, he is thrilled to be selected for this trial regeneration and sees the proposal as an opportunity to drop off the grid and start over. Little does he know what lies ahead… Just as the experiment starts, ethical opponents sabotage proceedings and violently shatter the lives of those involved, while events unravelling from the protest leave many secrets exposed.

I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but I just can't help pick up or click on a book with an amazing front. Each week I'll tell you about the books I've added to my TBR shelf just because of their cover. Today's cover is No smoke without fire by Paul Gitsham, a DCI Warren Jones Novel, why? Because I liked the colour of the text against the background, the blurb also sounds really interesting. Sometimes good typography is enough to lure me in and make me buy a book!

No Smoke Without Fire (DCI Warren Jones, #2)

Picture
DCI Warren Jones has a bad feeling when the body of a young woman turns up in Beaconsfield Woods. She’s been raped and strangled but the murderer has been careful to leave no DNA evidence.
There are, of course, suspects – boyfriend, father – to check out but, worryingly, it looks more and more like a stranger murder.

Warren’s worst fears are confirmed when another young woman is killed in the same way.

The MO fits that of Richard Cameron who served twelve years for rape. But Cameron never killed his victims and he has a cast-iron alibi.

Then personal tragedy intervenes and Warren is off the case. But the pressure is mounting and another woman goes missing. Warren is back but will the break he desperately needs come before there’s another victim?

I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but I just can't help pick up or click on a book with an amazing front. Each week I'll tell you about the books I've added to my TBR shelf just because of their cover. Today's cover is The Shuddering by Ania Ahlborn. The cover itself doesn't give much away about the story and this makes it mysterious and intriguing. Obviously set in a wooded area or forest, the blood gives it the sinister touch. The blurb also doesn't give much away and has me wondering what creature could be lurking within the forest and picking off the characters. Death, gore and a groups fight for survival against a hideous creature, yes please, added to my TBR list.

tHE sHUDDERING - aNIA aHLBORN

Picture
Ryan Adler and his twin sister, Jane, spent their happiest childhood days at their parents' mountain Colorado cabin - until divorce tore their family apart. Now, with the house about to be sold, the Adler twins gather with their closest friends for one last snowboarding-filled holiday. While commitment-phobic Ryan gazes longingly at Lauren, wondering if his playboy days are over, Jane's hopes of reconciling with her old boyfriend evaporate when he brings along his new fiancée. As drama builds among the friends, something lurks in the forest, watching the cabin, growing ever bolder as the snow falls - and hunger rises. After a blizzard leaves the group stranded, the true test of their love and loyalty begins as the hideous creatures outside close in, one bloody attack at a time. Now Ryan, Jane, and their friends must fight - tooth and nail, bullet and blade - for their lives. Or else surrender to unspeakable deaths in the darkened woods.

About the author

Picture
Born in Ciechanow Poland, Ania has always been drawn to the darker, mysterious, and sometimes morbid sides of life. Her earliest childhood memory is of crawling through a hole in the chain link fence that separated her family home from the large wooded cemetery next door. She’d spend hours among the headstones, breaking up bouquets of silk flowers so that everyone had their equal share.

Beyond writing, Ania enjoys gourmet cooking, baking, movies, drawing, and traveling. She currently resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her husband and two dogs, Beau the Scottie and Galaxy the Yorkie.

I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but I just can't help pick up or click on a book with an amazing front. Each week I'll tell you about the books I've added to my TBR shelf just because of their cover. Today I came across Wayne Simmons and his novel FLU. I love zombie books and this cover instantly grabbed my attention, once I read the blurb I had to add this to my TBR list.
Picture
There's a nasty flu going round. An epidemic, they call it. The posters say to cover your mouth when you sneeze, and throw away the tissue. But such simple measures won't stop this flu. Because when you catch this flu, armed police come and lock you in your house to die alone. When you catch this flu, it kills you in days. And two hours after it's killed you, your eyelids snap open again... FLU is a pacey, terrifying, frighteningly real zombie horror story.
